On Saturday, March 15th, children preparing for First Communion and their parents took part in a First Communion Retreat at the Sacred Heart Center in Newton, facilitated by the Salesian Sisters. The children crossed the Red Sea into Egypt and listened to the Exodus story in a large tent. The retreat journey brought the children from the Old Testament to the New Testament as the Sisters shared the story of the Last Supper while the children ate matzo and drank grape juice, just like Jesus and his disciples.
In the final activity, the children and parents watched as the Sisters combined flour and water that was poured onto a special grill. A large sheet with religious symbols emerged. Now, the children had an opportunity to place the sheet into a host maker. Parents and children witnessed how Communion hosts were made a long time ago. Thank you, Salesian Sisters, for an inspiring retreat.
